LSAC is constantly finding better ways to treat your pets based on new advances in veterinary medicine. Stem cell therapy is a breakthrough treatment that allows the body to regenerate itself, with its own cells. These stem cells are harvested from your pet’s own fat cells that lie under the skin called adipose cells.
Reports from around the United States are showing this procedure to be 80-90% effective with results lasting up to 4 years thus reducing the need for constant medication and improving your pet’s quality of life.
The science behind ADSC’s has several mechanisms associated with its therapeutic effects including its ability to reduce inflammation. One of these cells involved with this process are mesenchymal stem cells (which are part of the population of cells isolated from fat tissue). Mesenchymal stem cells also have well documented immunomodulatory effects that may benefit the process as well. Another mechanism of ADSC’s is to induce mature cartilage development. Other potential mechanisms include promoting tissue healing through local secretion of cytokines and growth factors which can serve to recruit stem cells from other tissues to the affected tissue in order to facilitate repair and healing.
With the many modalities of healing, ADSC’s have also been used outside of treatment for arthritis. Treatment for Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), Diabetes Mellitus, ACL rupture, and other uses have been documented as well. The initial treatment procedure remains the same for these conditions but the frequency and timing may differ. The good news is that the ADSC’s can be preserved and stored at an offsite facility, which makes future treatments more affordable and less risk to your pet.
Another type of therapy, Protein Rich Plasma (PRP) is also being used in the treatment of illness and disease. PRP is the part of the blood with concentrated platelets and other growth factors that are used to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and healing. PRP injections signal the body to send in additional stem cells to repair areas of injury or disease. PRP is specially formulated to maximize platelet density and healing ability. We at LSAC are incorporating PRP therapy with our stem cell therapy to facilitate in the healing and repair process.
